Abstract:
The excavations in the areas of Uskudar, Sirkeci and Yenikapi of Istanbul within the scope of the Marmaray project enabled us to reach very important findings in terms of urban archeology. The finds discovered during the excavations reveal the social, cultural and artistic development of Istanbul as well as the geological changes that it has experienced in its 8500-year history. In addition, 37 shipwrecks of the Byzantine period, especially in Yenikapi, have also provided many new information about the commercial life as well as eating habits of the city during this period. The ceramics belonging to the Ottoman period seized during the excavations helped to reveal the social life of the city from the conquest to the period of the Republic era. Thanks to the excavations carried out in different regions of Istanbul and Anatolia, our knowledge about the unglazed pottery of the Ottoman Period is increasing day by day. With the excavations made within the scope of the Marmaray project, this information has been further increased. The overlap of the ceramics we evaluated in our study with the Ottoman Period unglazed ceramics obtained during the excavations carried out in Istanbul beforehand in terms of form, dough and embellishment suggests that similar ceramics arc used in the daily use of the city, perhaps in accordance with the fashion of that day. The ceramics which we examined in our study were separated according to their forms and under these headings, information about the material and decoration features were given and the dates were tried to be compared with the ceramics seized during the other excavations made in and outside Istanbul. Besides, especially between 18th-20th. centuries, information about the fact that one of the production points meeting the needs of the daily use goods of the city should be eskadar neighborhood.
