Abstract:
To analyse clinic results of paediatric cataract cases in our region. Sixty four eyes of 37 patients, who underwent surgery with the diagnosis of paediatric cataract, in Adana Numune Education and Research Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic, between September 2003 and December 2011, were included by our study. Parents reasons for consulting our hospital, ocular and systematic diseases with paediatric cataract, visual acuities after surgery and side effects after and during surgery, were examined retrospectively. Mean age at the first operation was 57.8 +/- 52.3 months (ranged from 2 to 176 months). Mean follow up period was 40.1 months. The reason of parents' apply to hospital was whiteness in eye in 21 (56.8%) patients. Hereditary cataract was found in 19 (51.4%) patients. In 11 (33.3%) patients best-corrected visual acuity was found higher than 0.5. There was a significant difference between unilateral and bilateral groups in terms of best-corrected visual acuity (p=0.03). Postoperative fibrinoid reaction in anterior chamber was determined in 28 (41.8%) eyes. Posterior capsule opacification was developed in 6 (9%) eyes. In our study frequency of hereditary cataract and post operative fibrinoid reaction in anterior chamber was found higher than previous studies. It was detected that leukokoria had an important role in diagnosis. It was also founded that visual results were lower in unilateral cataracts than in bilateral cataracts.
