Background and aim: Recently, significant relationship was found between neutrophilllymphocyte (N/L) ratio and inflammatory diseases in many studies. The aim of this study was to investigate whether N/L ratio is associated with non inflammatory diseases or not.
Methods: 45 patients with multi nodular goiter (MNG) and 14 patients with normal thyroid glands were enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into two groups; patients with MNG and healthy controls. It is compared N/L ratio between these two groups. Patients with inflammatory disease and patients with electrolyte disorders were excluded from the study.
Results: 33.3% of the patients with MNG were male and 66.7% were female. Mean age of the patients with MNG were 61. 42.9% of the healthy subjects were male and 57.1% were female. Mean age of healthy subjects were 54. No significant difference was found between MNG and healthy controls in terms of N/L ratio.
Conclusion: Results of this study support the hypothesis of "There should be no significant association between N/L ratio and non-inflammatory diseases." This is the first study demonstrating that there is not any relationship between N/L ratio and non-inflammatory diseases. |
