Doğu Anadolu’nun Erzurum-Kars bölümü içinde yer alan en eski yerleşim yerlerinden olan Şüregel,
tarih boyunca bölgenin en önemli kültür ve ticaret merkezi olmuştur. Şüregel, Ortaçağ tarihi
boyunca bu özelliğini korumuş ve egemen olmak isteyen birçok devletin mücadele alanı haline
gelmiştir. İklimi elverişli, toprakları verimli, akarsuları bol bir coğrafi sahada kurulan herhangi bir
siyasi teşekkülün gelişme ihtimali yüksektir. Başka bir deyişle coğrafi faktörler olumlu ya da
olumsuz yönden tarihi olayları etkilemektedir. Kars’ın Şüregel bölümü ve bu alanın içinde kalan
Anı şehri de coğrafyanın verdiği avantajları ticari, kültürel açılardan olumlu yönde
değerlendirirken siyasi bütünlük oluşturamaması nedeniyle güçlü krallıklar kuramamıştır.
Anadolu’yu doğuyu batıya, kısmen de kuzeyi güneye bağlayan yolların kavşağında kurulan ve
yerleşme tarihi boyunca farklı devletlerin hâkimiyetinde kalan Şüregel, sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel
özellikleriyle önemli bir yerleşim merkezi olmuş ve kendine özgü bir form kazanmıştır. Bu
çalışmada ortaçağ boyunca Şüregel’in coğrafyasının sosyo-kültürel, ekonomik ve siyasi özellikleri
değerlendirilmiştir.
One of the oldest residential areas located in the region of Erzurum-Kars in Eastern Anatolia,
Şüregel has been cultural and trade center of high importance in the region throughout history. It
was, therefore, a place of struggle for any state which sought sovereignity over the area. It is
evident that any political organization that emerged in an area with appropriate climatic
conditions, fertile lands and abundant water sources has a high chance of development. In other
words, geographical factors affect, either positively or adversely, historical events. Şüregel area of
Kars and Anı city located in this area couldnt establish strong kingdoms due to the lack of a
political in spite of exploiting the advantages of geography in terms of cultural aspects positively.
Constructed at the juction of the roads that connect Anatolia from the east to west and partly
from the north to the South, Şüregel, which remained under the sovereignity of many different
states throughout history, was an important residential area with its socio-economic and cultural
characteristics and gained a form of its own. In this study, the focus is on the socio-cultural,
economic and political characteristics of Şüregal during the Milde-Age.
